For most farms, field corn is the usual choice

If someone asks me what works best for a corn maze, I usually point them toward a good field corn. The goal is having a crop that gives you decent height, holds up well, and still looks good when people are walking the maze in the fall.

What really matters in the crop

The exact hybrid or crop can vary, but these are usually the things that matter most:

• Enough height for a good maze wall
• Good standability so it stays up better in weather
• Maturity that fits your season and opening date
• The ability to stay green and present well deeper into fall

What I usually recommend

In a lot of cases, a drought-resistant field corn is a solid choice. If herbicide is part of your trail-maintenance plan, a compatible crop can make that easier. Follow the product label and applicable state requirements.

Once you know what you are planting, the next timing question is usually when to cut a corn maze.

What about sorghum or other maze crops?

Some farms do use sorghum or other similar tall annual crops instead of corn. That can make sense in the right situation. It depends on your farm, your season, and what kind of maze experience you want people to have.

One downside to sorghum is that it can blow into the trails more, which usually means more trail cleanup. The main thing is not getting locked into the word “corn” if another crop fits your farm better. You can see one non-corn example in the Lyon Family Farms milo maze project. But for most farms asking about a classic corn maze, field corn is still the normal starting point.
