Planning Timeline When to Plant Corn for a
Corn Maze.
======================================

If you're wanting to do a corn maze in the fall, it's a good idea to start planning for it early in the year. It does not really work on the same timeline as regular crop corn.

Plan the field with the maze in mind
------------------------------------

Not every farm plants on the exact same day, but the main thing is to think about the maze early enough that planting decisions can support it. The field needs to be planned around the maze, instead of being treated like ordinary grain corn.

A corn maze does not really run on the same timeline as regular crop corn. One of the main things to think about is timing the corn so it does not get too dry by the end of maze season. It is usually a good idea to keep the corn green as long as you can.

If you are still sorting out whether your field is big enough, take a look at [how many acres you need for a corn maze](https://cornmazedesign.com/how-many-acres-for-a-corn-maze). If you want a ballpark on cost too, the [corn maze cost page](https://cornmazedesign.com/corn-maze-cost) is a good next step.

A practical planning timeline
-----------------------------

 ### Late winter to early spring

If a maze is on your mind for the coming fall, this is a good time to reach out. There is still room to talk through field choice, approximate acreage, your plans for the season, and what kind of maze actually makes sense.

  ### Spring planting window

The exact planting date depends on where you are and your season start date. What matters most is planting the field with the maze in mind. A lot of times that means planting later than regular crop corn so it still looks good toward the end of maze season.

  ### Early summer design work

Once the field is planted and I have an outline, I'll work on the maze design and get it to you for review, so we're ready to go once the corn is at the right height to cut.

  ### Summer cutting window

The ideal cutting window is usually when the corn is about 18 to 36 inches tall. That is normally the sweet spot for getting clean trails while still ending up with good corn walls later on.

What affects the planting timeline
----------------------------------

There is not one perfect planting date for every farm in Virginia or across the Mid-Atlantic. The right timeline usually comes down to a few practical things:

- Your opening date for fall
- How long you want the maze to stay green and present well

If you are trying to decide what crop makes the most sense, read [best corn for a corn maze](https://cornmazedesign.com/best-corn-for-a-corn-maze). For more day-to-day questions about cutting height or maintenance, the [FAQ](https://cornmazedesign.com/faq) covers more of that side.

If you are planning for this fall
---------------------------------

Reach out as early as you can. Even a short conversation now can help you avoid planting a field that ends up being harder to use well later on.

If you already know your approximate acreage, your hoped-for opening window, and where the field is located, that is all we need to get the conversation started.
